Behind the Scene with Julia Harris from The Sustainable Studio
When looking for a new site for their artist-led space, The Sustainable Studio collaborated with Cardiff Council and found a new home at the former Transport Club on Tudor St.
Having recently opened their doors following Council support on a three-year lease, we caught up with co-founder Julia Harris about Cardiff, live music as well as the exciting new studio, and how each of her loves feeds into the other.

Talk us through The Sustainable Studio.
The Sustainable Studio is a dynamic, creative workspace designed to foster collaboration and innovation. It’s a hub for artists, designers, and makers who are passionate about sustainability and creativity. We offer a range of facilities including co-working spaces, studios, and now, a live music venue. Our goal is to provide a supportive environment where creative professionals can thrive, share ideas, and produce work that not only excels in quality but also embraces sustainable practices.
How important was it that the new venue has a live music space?
Having a live music space was incredibly important to us. Music is a powerful form of artistic expression and a significant aspect of cultural life. By incorporating a live music venue, we can support local musicians, provide a platform for diverse musical talents, and create a vibrant cultural hub. It aligns with our mission to promote creativity in all its forms and to make The Sustainable Studio a dynamic, multi-disciplinary space.
What will live music events add to The Sustainable Studio?
Live music events will infuse The Sustainable Studio with energy and excitement. They will attract a wider audience, foster a sense of community, and create opportunities for collaboration between musicians and other creatives. These events will also enhance our cultural offerings, making the studio not just a workspace but a destination for entertainment and inspiration.
Talk us through your experience of working with Cardiff Council.
Working with Cardiff Council has been a positive and collaborative experience. They have been supportive of our vision and instrumental in helping us navigate the logistical and regulatory aspects of establishing our new venue. Their commitment to supporting the arts and fostering creative industries in Cardiff has been evident throughout our partnership.
How big a part of the arts community in Cardiff does live music play?
Live music is a vital part of Cardiff’s arts community. The city has a rich musical heritage and a vibrant contemporary scene that includes everything from indie bands to classical performances. Live music brings people together, enriches the cultural landscape, and drives economic activity. It’s a cornerstone of Cardiff’s identity as a cultural capital.
How critical are creative spaces to a vibrant city?
Creative spaces are absolutely critical to a vibrant city. They serve as incubators for innovation, provide opportunities for cultural expression, and contribute to the city’s overall quality of life. These spaces attract talent, stimulate the economy, and make the city an exciting and dynamic place to live, work, and visit.
Does the new space allow you to try new things or push the boundaries on what can happen here?
Absolutely. The new space opens up a world of possibilities. With the live music venue, we can host a variety of events such as intimate acoustic sessions, experimental performances, and cross-disciplinary collaborations. It allows us to push the boundaries of what The Sustainable Studio can offer and to continually innovate in our programming.
What’s your favourite memory of live music in Cardiff?
One of my favourite memories is supporting Damian Rice at the Toucan Club when I used to gig as a solo performer. The atmosphere was electric as Damien was creating quite a buzz on his first solo tour of the UK. The crowd was incredibly engaged, and the performance was unforgettable. It was one of those nights where everything came together perfectly in one of the most intimate venues. You knew this guy was going to be huge and you were one of the first people to hear his music before he went global!
What is live music to you?
Live music is a form of storytelling and emotional expression that connects people on a deep level. It’s the energy of a crowd, the spontaneity of performance, and the shared experience that makes it so special. It’s an essential part of culture and community.
Tell us in three words the things you love most about Cardiff as a music city.
Diverse. Passionate. Inspiring.
