Behind the Scene with MACE THE GREAT

As part of our commissioned photo series by Ren Faulkner, featuring exciting artists either from, or with an affinity to Cardiff, we chat with MACE THE GREAT.

Following on from a string of industry-approved singles, a spot on the BBC Documentary ‘Wales: Music Nation’ and his involvement with FA Wales for the World Cup campaign, Mace The Great continues to take Welsh rap global. His LP ‘SplottWorld’ is named after his hometown right here in Cardiff.

The first album that really made me a fan of music was 50 Cent ‘Get Rich Or Die Trying’

Are there any unexpected sources of inspiration that influence your work?

There’s so many different things that inspire my work but to name a few would be other people’s stories and my family and friends.

If you could choose any 3 artists in the world to perform at a future Cardiff Music City Festival, who would you pick?

50 Cent, Tems & Skepta

Is there a part of Cardiff that feels particularly tied to your music or personal journey as an artist?

That would be Splott where I grew up, however, I’m tied to Cardiff as a whole.

What is your most fond memory of a gig in Cardiff, either one you have attended or performed, and what made it so special?

Supporting Dizzee Rascal at Utilita Arena Cardiff.

Which Welsh artists do you think are doing exciting things right now, and deserve people’s attention?

Celo, Real Mud Babies, baddathanwho, Local and many more!

.

If you could collaborate with any artist or producer, who would you choose?

Producer would be Skepta, artist would be Stormzy.

Can you tell us about how the Welcome To Wales event at Cardiff Music City Festival was conceived, the process of bringing it together, and the reception it received?

Perrie and I just wanted to shine a light on the city that was a true representation of today’s music of black origin scene in Wales, it was about giving others an opportunity and I don’t think it could have been received any better..

What did you love most and learn most that night?

Letting others shine won’t dim yours…it’s not a selfish thing it takes all of us to make these moments happen.
