THE FIRST EVER CARDIFF MUSIC CITY FESTIVAL WRAPS UP
Earlier this year, the inaugural Cardiff Music City Festival took place – lasting 24 days and featuring more than 200 artists and 80 events spread across 25 venues. This project was a key initiative to support the Cardiff Music Strategy and music development in Cardiff, which launched officially following a number of exhilarating build-up events in the months preceding.
The festival aimed to push the boundaries of music innovation, technology and performance. The vision was designed and developed by Cardiff’s culture team and in collaboration with the wider music sector, supported by Welsh Government and Cardiff Council. The festival attracted thousands of music fans to performances by international artists, including Pino Palladino, Kneecap, Lauryn Hill, Leftfield and Orbital, as well as local talent such as Aleighcia Scott, Elkka, Mace the Great, Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard and N’famady Kouyate.
Other highlights of the festival included an industry conference featuring sessions with Radiohead’s Philip Selway and Lily Fontaine of Mercury Music Prize winners, English Teacher. Local drum n’ bass legend High Contrast also delivered a live-streamed music production masterclass as part of the festival.
The renowned new music festival Sŵn (fast approaching its twentieth year) and Wales Millennium Centre’s international arts weekend, Llais (celebrating the diversity of voices around the globe and across genres) became vital parts of this bigger, ambitious endeavour. Cardiff Music City Festival invited international and local promoters, tech and artists to help programme and perform at dazzling music events, immersive installations, informative talks and more right across the city in venues including:
Tramshed // Porter’s // Tiny Rebel Cardiff // Moon // RWCMD // The Gate // CULTVR // Utilita Arena Cardiff // Cardiff Castle // District // Wales Millennium Centre // Cardiff Students’ Union (Great Hall) // Clwb Ifor Bach // Sustainable Studios // Chapter // Sustainable Studios // Cornerstone // Fuel // BBC Cymru/Wales // The Globe // University of South Wales – Atrium
